What this discount calculator does
Calculate the discount amount, sale price and total savings from an original price and discount percentage.
How to use the calculator
Enter the original price and discount percentage. For multiple sequential discounts, calculate each discount in sequence rather than simply adding the percentages.
How the calculation works
Discount amount = original price × discount rate. Sale price = original price − discount amount.
What the result means
Example: a $100 item with a 20% discount costs $80 before tax. A 7% sales tax would make the final modeled price $85.60.
Important assumptions and limitations
A 20% discount followed by 20% off the reduced price is not the same as 40% off the original price. Taxes, shipping and fees may also affect the final amount paid.
Frequently asked questions
Is sales tax calculated before or after the discount?
CalcResults applies the discount first and then calculates the entered sales tax on the discounted price.

How much money do I save with a discount?
Savings equals the original price multiplied by the discount percentage.
Savings equals the original price multiplied by the discount percentage.
Can I enter a 100% discount?
Yes. A 100% discount makes the pre-tax price zero; any entered sales tax is also zero in this model.

Does this include coupons and stacked discounts?
Only one discount percentage is modeled. Multiple sequential discounts should be entered as separate calculations because percentages are not generally additive.
