Average Calculator
Calculate the arithmetic mean.
What this average calculator does
Calculate the arithmetic mean of a list of numbers and review the values used in the calculation.
How to use the calculator
Enter the numbers you want included and make sure blank entries are not accidentally treated as zeros. The arithmetic mean is useful when each observation should have equal weight.
How the calculation works
Arithmetic mean = sum of all included values รท number of included values. The result can be strongly affected by unusually high or low values.
What the result means
Example: the average of 10, 20 and 30 is 20 because their sum is 60 and there are three values.
Important assumptions and limitations
For skewed data or datasets with outliers, the median may better represent a typical value. The average calculator intentionally calculates the arithmetic mean unless another measure is specified.
Frequently asked questions
Add all included values and divide the sum by the number of values. CalcResults performs that arithmetic from the comma-separated values you enter.
Yes. Negative values are valid numerical inputs and are included in the sum and count.
Empty or non-numeric comma-separated entries are ignored, while valid numbers are included.
The mean average uses the sum divided by the count. The median is the middle value after sorting and is not calculated by this tool.
