What this auto loan calculator does

Compare vehicle financing by estimating the payment and total interest from the amount financed, APR and loan term.

How to use the calculator

Start with the amount you actually expect to finance, not just the advertised vehicle price. Taxes, title fees, dealer fees, add-ons, trade-in value and down payment can change the amount financed.

How the calculation works

The calculator uses standard fixed-payment amortization. The estimated total interest is the sum of scheduled payments minus the amount financed. It does not replace a lender’s Truth in Lending disclosure.

What the result means

Example: financing $25,000 at 7% for 60 months produces a payment of about $495.03 before other ownership costs.

Important assumptions and limitations

A lower monthly payment is not automatically a cheaper loan. CFPB and FTC guidance emphasize comparing APR, term, amount financed, finance charge and total cost—not just the monthly payment.

Frequently asked questions

Does the payment include sales tax?
Yes. The entered sales tax is added to the taxable vehicle amount after the down payment and trade-in credit, then included in the financed amount.
Does it include dealer fees or negative equity?
No. Registration, dealer fees, warranties, and negative equity from a trade-in are not modeled unless you incorporate them into the amount yourself.
Why does a longer loan reduce the monthly payment?
A longer term spreads the balance over more payments, but it normally increases total interest when the APR is unchanged.
Is the APR the same as the interest rate on my contract?
Use the APR shown by the lender when possible. The calculator treats the entered APR as a nominal annual rate for monthly amortization.
