Fuel Cost Calculator
Estimate fuel cost for a trip.
What this fuel cost calculator does
Estimate the fuel expense of a trip from distance, fuel economy and fuel price.
How to use the calculator
Enter the trip distance, vehicle fuel economy and current fuel price. For round trips, enter the total distance or use the calculatorโs trip setting if available.
How the calculation works
Fuel used = distance รท fuel economy. Estimated fuel cost = fuel used ร price per unit of fuel. For L/100 km, the calculation uses liters consumed per 100 kilometers rather than miles per gallon.
What the result means
Example: a 300-mile trip at 30 MPG uses about 10 gallons. At $3.50 per gallon, estimated fuel cost is $35.
Important assumptions and limitations
Real-world fuel economy varies with speed, traffic, temperature, payload, tire pressure and driving style. The result is therefore an estimate rather than a guaranteed fuel bill.
Frequently asked questions
Fuel cost equals trip distance divided by vehicle MPG, multiplied by fuel price per gallon.
Only if you enter an MPG that reflects your actual driving. Traffic, weather, speed, payload, tire pressure and driving style can change fuel economy.
Yes. The result includes an estimated fuel cost per mile based on your entered distance and fuel price.
Yes, mathematically, as long as the fuel price is entered per gallon and the vehicle economy is expressed in miles per gallon.
